No child Left Behind (NCLB)

This Federal Law helps to ensure that every student receives a high quality education. This applies to
all students with and without disabilities and all public schools.

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA2004)

IDEA2004 is the Federal special education law. It is only a partially funded federal mandate. Chapter
71B is the Massachusetts statute that includes all of the federal protections of IDEA and additional state
requirements. It provides federal funding to the states.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

This law is part of the US Federal Civil Rights Law. It prohibits discrimination against people with
disabilities. It also requires states to provide reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.
Section 504 also applies to children who may have a disability but are not eligible for special
education services under IDEA.
